In the 2023 Sustainable Yearbook Rankings, China Airlines ranks first in the global aviation industry.
S&P Global, an international sustainability rating agency, announced the latest assessment results of The Sustainability Yearbook 2023. China Airlines was awarded the highest score in the global aviation industry in ESG (environmental protection, social responsibility and corporate governance), and won the Sustainability Yearbook highest honor in the top 1%. China Airlines was the only transportation company in Taiwan that has been recognized in the list six times, marking a new milestone in the sustainable development of national aviation.
The 2023 Sustainability Yearbook is compiled according to the annual evaluation results of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) and evaluates the sustainability performance of more than 7,800 large-scale enterprises in 61 industries around the world, and then evaluates the performance of each enterprise in the industry field. These results assess the world's top 1%, 5% and 10% of companies regarding sustainability, and only 5 global airlines were selected for the evaluation. China Airlines performed well in the two aspects of environment and society. In addition to human capital development, corporate citizenship and charity, passenger safety, sustainable marketing, and brand awareness, China Airlines scored full marks in the selection topics, and environmental policy and management system, operating ecology, etc. On a total of 10 items, including efficiency, climate strategy, leftover food and waste, China Airlines achieved the highest score in the aviation industry. For freight, which achieved outstanding performance during the epidemic, the airline also achieved full marks in the evaluation items of fuel efficiency and management, demonstrating the success of the company's operating strategy.
China Airlines is committed to corporate sustainability, declaring "net zero carbon emissions" by 2050, with 11 short, medium, and long-term goals for environmental protection and sustainable development tied to SDGs. They are also implementing more than 70 KPIs for environmental protection and energy conservation yearly; at the same time, it also independently promotes ground operations to meet a 10% renewable energy target. In addition, in response to climate risks, China Airlines has taken the lead in publishing the only climate-related financial disclosure (TCFD) independent report in Taiwan's transportation industry and is the only airline in Taiwan to introduce sustainable fuel addition (SAF) to its new fleet. Last year, the airline participated in the first SkyTeam Sustainable Flight Challenge and won the "Best Cargo Sustainable Innovation Award" and "Best Employee Participation Award.”
